Starting with Baby Steps in The World Of Show Biz

Many of us have our idols that we’d love to model ourselves after. Whether it’s an old great like Cary Grant or Lucile Ball that we fancy ourselves like or a big star from today like George Clooney or Halle Berry, becoming an actor is something that we daydream and night dream about. All those stars started out just like you, wanting it so badly they could taste it. Some day you might be someone’s idol. If you read stories from many of today’s top actors, you’ll find out that they worked hard, they sometimes went hungry and they faced rejection. Acting success starts with a few baby steps. You need to learn about self promotion, you should find an agent and you should try out for as many auditions as you can.

Self Promotion

Most people aren’t simply discovered on the street. We’ve all seem movies where a star or starlet was approached at random by a big producer. It’s a nice fantasy but unfortunately, reality isn’t exactly like that.   We need to promote ourselves so that we can get noticed. It’s a lot of work but it’s a learning process as well.

It takes work to become an actor and most successful actors and actresses did a lot of bit parts, a lot of hard work and had a lot of rejections. It can take a lot of years to land that dream role or become a household name.

You need to work hard and persevere. You need to develop a thick skin for rejections and be able to take criticism and turn it into a life lesson so you can improve. You need to learn to promote yourself and make yourself a marketable commodity. We’ll talk more about self promotion later. There are many ways to cut corners and get recognized sooner than later.

Your Agent, Your Friend

Not everyone has an agent and some people climb their way to success alone but having a great agent can definitely work in your favor. An agent can do many things for you such as:

  • Negotiate the best pay
  • Find you more roles
  • Handle the business side and accounting side of your career
  • Be your ally

We’ll help you later on with tips on finding a great talent agent and how to get the most out of your agent. Not only can your agent help you but they can also be a hindrance to you so finding the right agent is very important.

Learning from Auditions

The more auditions you do, the more you will learn about acting and the world of show business. The more you learn, the more talented you will become.  Auditions can teach you a wealth of information about what works and what doesn’t work. We will go into more detail later about auditioning but you should audition as much as possible.

You need to know how to dress, how to act and how to make the most of an audition. Every audition is like a job interview and even if you don’t get the job, you can learn from every interview you have and use that knowledge to help you win at future auditions.
