Fine Tuning your Child’s Other Talents

Acting encompasses more than being able to memorize lines, even though that is a very important part. It requires the actor to use every part of themselves personally and professionally to create a believable role that viewers can believe in. To that end, if your child wants to pursue an acting career, it may be worth it to take the time to cultivate all of their many talents.

So your child wants to be an actor. After an audition, the director might say something like: “Okay, so what else can he/she do?” you don’t want your child to draw a blank at this question. It could spell the end of their chances for that role, but it might also bring about a valuable lesson.

In the world of acting, a good child actor will bring all of their gifts to bear. Have you been surprised when you learned that an actor could also sing or dance? In the theater, you do it all: sing, dance and have a comedic presence.

When it comes to auditioning, your child could become just another pretty face in the crowd unless they can show that they are not limited to one talent. While they are participating in acting classes, don’t neglect their other talents as far as finding someone to nurture them.

Voice coaches are not only good for singing but also for voice over work. Voice-over actors don’t simply recite lines but also get into the animated character through movements and voice changes. Singing is a valuable talent for roles that require a pretty face and a lovely voice. Musical theater is a great place to pursue both of these talents simultaneously.

What about musical talents? If your child can play the piano, draw, play another instrument, tap dance or what have you, all of these things set them apart from the general group that will audition at certain casting calls. Their agent can also try to garner juicier roles when they have multi-talented clients.

While you are looking to see what type of acting chops your kid has, don’t forget to identify their other valuable talents as well. It will be worth the expense to find classes or coaches for singing lessons, music lessons, dance lessons and even modeling lessons. Modeling teaches poise, grace under pressure and how to express yourself in a certain way on command.

Does your child speak another language? This is also valuable for non-English speaking roles. They have just increased their marketability.
